Have you ever installed an update that made things worse? After decades of effort, why are computers still insecure? Something is wrong with how we make and share software.

An axe made in 1840 still works today, unless it rusted. Software should be different, yet it isn't because the platforms our software runs on keep changing. There are also economic incentives, if software could be finished, you would not have to keep buying it each month. This endless hamster wheel must end.

Rapid change has slowed. The main ways we use computers are now stable. We will keep using laptops, desktops, phones, and tablets. We will keep using keyboards, mice, touchpads, and touchscreens. We will keep using email, chat, and web pages. This stability lets us focus on improving and refining computers.

The goal is to create software that is written once and does not need updates. Programs that can be bought once, kept forever, and continue to work. Developers can focus on building new software instead of rewriting the same systems again and again.

In order to achieve this we have to redesign and simplify all our software from the hardware layer and up. We also need to simplify how we compile our software. That is why the initial prototype for Serēnum was to create minimalist graphical operation system for a risc-v SOC written from scratch in a new self-hosted programming language in latin that can connect to the internet. This is done and can be purchased today. You get the computer itself and all of the 50 000 lines of code it takes to run.

Our existing software platforms are like a ship on fire in the middle of the ocean. Decaying and decomposing. It will not be long until it sinks. Will you help us build a new ship?
